Because two of the largest AI answer engines retrieve their live web results from Bing, not from an index they built themselves. Neither Microsoft Copilot nor ChatGPT is running an independent crawl-and-rank system the way Google does. They are reading off Bing's shelf, which means Bing's crawler, Bing's ranking, and Bing's index gaps become your crawler, your ranking, and your gaps in two products at once.

Copilot is built directly on Bing's index

Copilot's consumer search is a Microsoft product built on Microsoft's own search infrastructure. ChatGPT leans on Bing too, even though it isn't Microsoft's product

This is the part that surprises people, because ChatGPT is OpenAI's product and OpenAI is not Microsoft. But ChatGPT Search doesn't run its own independent web index. Its documentation for site owners describes OAI-SearchBot as the crawler that supplements search results with fresh, on-demand page fetches, layered on top of a baseline retrieval system that draws primarily from Bing under OpenAI's long-standing Microsoft partnership. The practical read: getting indexed and ranking in Bing is closer to a prerequisite for ChatGPT citations than a nice-to-have.

The data backs that up more precisely than a partnership announcement can. Being indexed doesn't mean being cited. Verify your site (import from Google Search Console is the fast path)

If you already have a verified property in Google Search Console, don't bother with the meta tag, XML file, or DNS/CNAME options. The crawl data makes the point better than any advice can. Generate a key, host it at your domain root, and submit URLs via a simple HTTP call; most CMS platforms have built-in support, and a handful of lines of code cover the rest. Bing's own guidance is explicit that combining a complete sitemap with IndexNow "provides the strongest foundation for keeping your content fresh, discoverable, and visible" in AI-powered search specifically, not just classic search. Once the first three steps are live, this is where you find out if they worked.
